Week 3 Updates
S'up everybody,
Last week we just had so far the best meeting. A lot of new members showed up with great enthusiasm( Thank you Wendy, Matt and Eugene ! ) and everyone was doing excelent sketches ( Thank you Ross, Eric, Arron and Ron). I'm so HAPPY !!! We finally arrived at an acceptable summary for our story. This is almost a brand new story based off ideas from the original after the team put all sort off crazy ideas on the table. So here is the REAL summary for it, oh yeahhhh :
Well, let say i like how clear and open-ended the layout of the story is . However, I feel that it's a little predictable and cliche. I'm not denying that it has tremendous potential for the design and animation; but storytelling wise, I prefer a story with more twists and anticipation factor. The only thing that I really like right now is THE RESISTANCE. That's a solid idea. So let develop this summary more on our next meeting and see how it turns out.

- 200 years ago, there's an ambitious scientist who wanted to rule over mankind. He created a mighty army of sea creature and led them to invade the human world.
- Succeeded, he became the Emperor of his new Aqua Empire where sea creatures are the rulers and humans are servants.
- In present time, we start in a village of humans that escaped the invasion by finding a land that is hidden from the Aqua Empire. Here in this village live our protagonist, Roka and his sister, Fey.
- One day, Roka flies with his glider hovering over the town. He crashes and goes unconcious.
- He wakes up being tended to by a resistance group who also survived the invasion and have been fighting the Empire for years.
- Roka returns to his village and find out it had been taken over by the Empire. Everyone is dead and Fey is gone.
- Roka joins the resistance to find his sister and later on, battles the Empire for humans' freedom.
- Roka and the resistance emerge victorious over the Emperial army and imprison the Emperor.
- Fish and humans then live together.
- The message: Still working on how to phrase it properly. But so far we have : love, unity, freedom and ...America ?

3rd Week Planning
Alright gang,
For this coming meeting on Sunday 2pm in Art 206, we will continue working on the story and produce more sketches/illustration. I will bring in projector and laptop to work with just like last week. This week let try and nail some of the key points like the level of technology and style for the film.

Week 2 Updates
Yo all,
It's time for our weekly post !
Last week meeting was awesome again thanks to everyone. I would like to apologize for that so called summary that so freaking huge I don't even wanna read it. So, just read it to have a general ideas of what this film will be about; however, we are reconstructing that story vigorously bit by bit and making dramatic changes, cut, additions,..etc to make it better. Last week we worked on the beginning of the film and it went really well. At this rate, in two month from now on, the story will be really good. I will post a "real" summary" of the refined story when we finish.
We also did a bunch of sketches for some scenes and characters. These are mine for some of the creatures and the main character. Think the creatures are a little bit too cute, will intensify them later. Will do some location studies for the film soon. Oh, we're thinking of changing the protagonist name to Roka btw. Let us know what you think. Oh and don't forget to check out Aaron awesome color sketch and Julio kick ass sketches down below too.

2nd Meeting Planning

SO now that you've all read the story, we will maybe move on to the less dry stuffs. This week beside working on refining the story, let get together and do some sketches. I understand that the story is still under development but i know for sure that some characters, objects and locations will be there no matter what. Therefore, we can work on those subjects for now. I have a projector and screen for this week meeting ( yeah, I traded a cigar with Courtney for these baddies,.... no just kidding haha ! ). Now we can have a lot of fun looking at everyone sketches on the big screen. I will bring my laptop too ( and if you want to, do so ) so we can do research. I will also bring in my sketches as well even though I mentioned last week that I don't want to limit everyone creativity by injecting mine too early on in the project but ... WTH.

Ron's Compleled Original Story
What's up gang,
Like I promised, the summary for the story is due tonight. I finally found some time for the project. So I'm writing the summary for the story right now based mainly on my original because i haven't found the best way to integrate your ideas and suggestions yet. Anyway, here goes :
Years in the past, a mad scientist hold a deep grudge against mankind. So deep that he invented a technology to extract human traits and turned them into crystals. He then looked for candidates to inject these crystals into, in the hope of creating a new race that would subdue mankind...
Then fast forward (like ... really really fast) to present day, we are at the city of YYY, attending a history class at some high school. Well the funny part is, all of the students and even the teacher here are sea creatures !!! Well, the teacher is going on and on about how a group of marine animals have managed to dethrone human and enslave them. They did that by obtaining/stealing the technology from this one human genius to extract human traits, weaken them and then easily defeated them in a very one-sided battle. These fine "fishes"( I will just refer to sea creatures from now on as fishes to save typing space ) then established their new kingdom, let call it Aqua Empire for the time being. Their king then started a hunt for remnant of mankind to capture them, extract their traits, and enslave them. And then, what do the fishes do with these traits crystal that they got from human ? Well, their elected government for the ease of govern, decided to selectively distribute these crystal evenly into the empire's towns. Each town receives a trait that will dictate how its citizens will behave. So a town that receives the "XYZ" trait will all be XYZ in everything they do. The town's architecture, living style, and everything else that you can think off will also be all about XYZ. That means no fish shall have perfect set of traits, except the fish king so that he can govern his citizens.
Well enough with the fishes for now with all their breaking news, let take a look at the human in this new world. At this point, human who involved in that fateful invasion of the fishes as well as the hunt had already lost all their traits and are living plant life. They live to obey and serve the Aqua Empire . They are sent to labor camps to work under supervision of the fish Imperial Army and all their productions are shipped to the empire. However, not all human suffered that ill fate, deep in the mountain of ZZZ resides a group of people who were disturbed by the way the human society in the last day of its existence was living, that they departed and built their new homes here in this beautiful valley full of flower, animals and natural resources. The Aqua Empire never discover their existence thanks to a thick wall of fog that embrace the town. The town people do feel sorry for their fellow downtown, but they listen to their elder and stay away from the powerful Aqua Empire for their own existence. The elder is a very wise man. He's not very socialized but he's one of the first men to arrive at this place who is still alive and he brought a lot of significant inventions to the town; therefore people respected him as the town elder. He lives in a secluded mountain overlooking the rest of the valley with two children, a boy and his sister.
The two children grew up peacefully on the mountain. The boy, our protagonist here (you know what, let name him Fé for now ! "Fé" mean faith in Portuguese), always take his blind little sister on his "adventures' around town, up and down the hills on his little vespa ( sorry, but riding vespa was my favorite part time when I was in Vietnam- my hometown so I just have to bring that into this story for my selfish indulgence) and just chill at the end of the day on the flower bed of the valley. Everything seem perfectly fine until one day out of the blue, she tells her brother "How do flowers look like ? I want to see them once ". Fé fell like a dagger just stabbed his heart. How didn't he realize how unlucky his sister is to not able to see what this wonderful town has to offer ? He decided to fulfill his sister wish and so he talked to the elder for advise. The elder let him know that according to rumor from the dare devils who ventured to the Aqua Empire; the mayor of the town of Greed (well we don't have to tell the audience right away at this point that this is the greedy town, but we can work on the naming convention later ) actually has a necklace that can heal body organs. If Fé go there and steal it from him, there's a chance that his sister's vision can be restored.
Fé then went to the town of greed. And by the devil luck, there's a festival going on here. With all the commotions and chaos in the town, Fé managed to steal the major's necklace. Here he met a mysterious young girl that aided him to escape the town safely. Unfortunately, it seem the necklace was not enough. Fe was very depressed but still determined to help his sister and kept asking the elder for alternative ways. The elder then told him that it might need all the necklaces/artifacts from these Aqua cities' governors to do the magic.
Now at this point you probably asking yourselves like what the hell ? There's something fishy about this dude. Why is he trying to send Fe on this dangerous mission ? Plus the fact that the necklace didn't work sounds bs. It seems like the elder is trying to use Fe love for his sis to obtain these artifacts for him, right ? Well, that's his intention exactly. Now I'm not sure if this is the best time to unfold this in the story but the elder is actually the mad scientist who invented the extracting technology. What happened was he chose sea creatures to be the receivers of his human trait crystals. The experiment was a success. The fishes evolved dramatically into a much better race. In fact, their evolution went over the scientist's expectation. The fishes eventually denied their creator's authority. They elected their own leaders, formed their own society and soon after that, rebelled against the scientist. They captured him and threatened him to reveal the secret of the extraction engine. After they learned it and built their own engine, they decided that the scientist has no more use to them and wanted to use him as their first extraction. However, having predicted this outcome, the scientist escaped.
He then arrived at the ZZZ valley and found out about the secret human society here. Remember i told you about the elder/scientist was the only one out of the founders of the town who is still alive. Well, that's not really what happened. He was welcomed to the town by the nice folks here. But soon, he brain washed them with his evil technology that you all know so well by now I suppose.What's the reason for him to do that ? He realized that his new goal is now to take down the fishes, reclaim his invention so that he's the only one in control. He will be the overlord. Fe's sister is not even his real sister. She's just an unlucky blind girl that the scientist picked out from the town people to be Fe's sister. Both Fe and his "sister" are also victim of the scientist's extraction. He planned out everything to lure Fe into collecting these crystals in form of artifacts from the fishes for him in order to weaken them. The scientist also gave Fe traits that would allow Fe to carry out his mission such as bravery, compassion, and loyalty. Furthermore, Fe is just another one of his experiments. Before Fe, the scientist have been using other kids in this town and sent them to the aqua Empire. None of these kids returned.
Anyway, Fe trusted the elder and set out to collect these items. He was aid all the time by that mysterious young girl who helped him earlier at the Greed town. She will act as a guide to the Aqua Empire and also she pretty good at this thievery business. So Fe has quite an awesome companion now. Spoiler alert : She likes him ! Okay back to the story. Through the trips to these towns (for the possibility of production we will limit the towns number to 4 including greed town as we agreed and the Aqua Place where the fish lord and the government reside), Fe's personality will be slowly affected by these trait crystals that he stole. Every time that he came back to his town. He will notice how different the town people behave because he's now a more sophisticated form of human with these new traits in him. He also gradually recovers his memory. As he pieces things together, there are memory about people he had that he haven't seen before but not from his town. He even remembered locations that he has been to before but he can't tell when. To one point, he will start asking himself about his past and his identity . He decided to comeback to the town to ask the elder about it but no one will be there anymore. Panicked and worry about his sister, Fe look for his sister everywhere only to find [something i haven't decided yet] that he gave it to her as a memento and a dagger stuck to it. He then came up with a plan with his companion to infiltrate the empire.
On their way there, they will find it's extremely difficult to get through their security. But the girl spots a cargo airship heading toward the human labor camp to pick up goods. She goes "bingo" and tells Fe that they're in luck because these airships only show up once in a while and they can use it as a mean to reach the city. Fe follows her to the destination of the ship so that they can wait for a chance to get on it. Here he witnesses all these human being enslaved. He will be confused, he didn't know there are so many human. He's been thinking that his town people are the only humans left in this world. He turns to the girl for an explanation but she asks him to focus on the task at hand and promises to tell him later. They manage to get on the ship and make their way pass the city gate. They then work their way to the chamber of extraction where Fe witness the extraction of his town people. Here the girl reveals her identity as the scientist's latest experiment before Fe, who actually survived on her last mission. She learned everything during her time living among the fishes. She tells Fe everything about what ultimately happened to the world and who the elder really is as well as the fact that Fe's sister is not "real". Shocked and angry, Fe wanted to go look for the scientist right away and make him return the traits to all human. Then suddenly, there's an alert on the big screen saying that the king has been murdered by a man in the picture- the elder. The girl explained to Fe that the elder must has killed the fish king because the king is the only creature beside the scientist that have the complete trait set, (remember ?) ; so that the elder now can be the only completed human. Fe rushed to the King Chamber. There, he then battle fiercely with one he once called father and emerged victorious.
Then him and the girl went to the engine and try to revert the engine function to return the traits to mankind. However, even after all the people in the camp received their traits back, they're not quite human yet.There's something wrong. They're missing "love" ,"faith", "passion" and "sacrifice". After all these years, these traits crystals had lost their power because these traits deteriorate overtime. Now Fe and the girl decided that they will have to give up their bodies and hope that they carry these precious traits. It turned out Fe carries "passion" and "faith" while the girl carries "love" and "sacrifice". They have built up these traits on their own on their journey. After all, humanity is restored. Human also learn to live peacefully with the fishes. Fe and the girl (god damn it i better name her soon on my next post) go back to ZZZ valley and start their new life.

The overall message of this story is traits are what make humans who they are. Traits, either positive or negative, define human and guide their actions. Without them, humans are the same thing as animals.
To be obsessed with negative trait wills lead human to destruction. Instead, let love, faith, passion and sacrifice be the guiding light to balance all our traits and make better human out of us.
All right, there you have it. That's the story I've been holding you guys up to. I know there are flaws and things that need explanation here and there. Maybe typos and grammars are in there too because i did this in a hurry so everyone can finally have the story. I'm still working on this ending to make it better. Plus, team members have been suggesting alternative ways to tell the story, even different endings. I acknowledge them all and thank you so much for your opinions. I'm sorry I'm not going to post your thinking here on this post because I want everyone to see the original version. Maybe I will do that on next week publication. She tells Fe everything about what ultimately happened to the world and who the elder really is as well as the fact that Fe's sister is not "real". Shocked and angry, Fe wanted to go look for the scientist right away and make him return the traits to all human. Then suddenly, there's an alert on the big screen saying that the king has been murdered by a man in the picture- the elder. The girl explained to Fe that the elder must has killed the fish king because the king is the only creature beside the scientist that have the complete trait set, (remember ?) ; so that the elder now can be the only completed human. Fe rushed to the King Chamber. There, he then battle fiercely with one he once called father and emerged victorious.
Then him and the girl went to the engine and try to revert the engine function to return the traits to mankind. However, even after all the people in the camp received their traits back, they're not quite human yet.There's something wrong. They're missing "love" ,"faith", "passion" and "sacrifice". After all these years, these traits crystals had lost their power because these traits deteriorate overtime. Now Fe and the girl decided that they will have to give up their bodies and hope that they carry these precious traits. It turned out Fe carries "passion" and "faith" while the girl carries "love" and "sacrifice". They have built up these traits on their own on their journey. After all, humanity is restored. Human also learn to live peacefully with the fishes. Fe and the girl (god damn it i better name her soon on my next post) go back to ZZZ valley and start their new life.
The End .... Maybe
The overall message of this story is traits are what make humans who they are. Traits, either positive or negative, define human and guide their actions. Without them, humans are the same thing as animals.
To be obsessed with negative trait wills lead human to destruction. Instead, let love, faith, passion and sacrifice be the guiding light to balance all our traits and make better human out of us.
All right, there you have it. That's the story I've been holding you guys up to. I know there are flaws and things that need explanation here and there. Maybe typos and grammars are in there too because i did this in a hurry so everyone can finally have the story. I'm still working on this ending to make it better. Plus, team members have been suggesting alternative ways to tell the story, even different endings. I acknowledge them all and thank you so much for your opinions. I'm sorry I'm not going to post your thinking here on this post because I want everyone to see the original version. Maybe I will do that on next week publication. Please make any further suggestions to the story by posting your corrections, additions, or deletions, etc.... on a separate post. You can also use my story as a base and then type your opinion in the [ ] after the part that you think should be edited. Like this [ Ron, I think this part sucks bro. Work harder !!! ]. First Week Updates
What's up guys and gals !
First i would like to re-state the objectives of this project :
a. We are aiming to make a kick ass feature/ small episodes of a story that I have been developed and will be refined by you in the near future.
b. Provide ourselves an opportunity to practice our skills whether it's animation, illustration, story boarding, visual development, graphic design, etc... with a solid objective.
c. A chance to work with a team, have fun, learn from each other and get your name in the credit for the final product.
Okay with all that blah blah blah out of the way,
Our first meeting was really remarkable. I would like to thank you everyone for spending your valuable Saturday morning to come and join the meeting. I love the high level of participation from everyone. Your critical opinions for the story as well as direction for the production process blew my mind. Keep this up and we will kick ass.
For this week publication, I will try to come up with an appropriate summary for such a complicated story. This will be quite a challenge at this point especially when everyone still discussing about other possible ways to tell this story. On top of that, we have also agreed that this story needs more cohesiveness, a little simplification and an ending that really sell. That's a lot to do but I believe a good plan and team effort will take care of that. So forgive me if the summary doesn't meet your expectation. It will be up in the next couple days ( for now I have Raquel class midterm to take care of) so please check it out around Wednesday or Thursday.
For now, I will post some video clips of how I envision the art styles for our animation. For the flashbacks/history lesson scenes, we shall be using the style of "The Witcher 2" memories cutscenes and for the animation, we will be using the style of "How to train your dragon" the TV series, episode 1 and 2 ( the part when Gobber tells the story of the unlucky Viking and the part when he tells the story of his youth and how the Boneknapper is always after him ).

Alright, next is the production timeline for this year and upcoming Summer:
October- Winter Break : Completed Story and Illustrations
Post Winter Break/ Pre Spring : Present story to Faculty for feedback
Spring: Visual Dept and selective Story Boarding for Summer production only (10min episode).
The team will meet every Saturday at 10am in the Art Building Room 206 ( Location may be changed ). The project is open for everyone anytime.
So basically, after we all agreed on the story, we will move on to select a very interesting part from it and focus on producing a rock solid 10 min short out of it during the summer. Then we will premier it at one of the SHM Club meetings or 14F next Fall to measure our success. After that we will move on to finish the rest of the story up.
Also, here are some photos of my hometown locations that I proposed to the group as a candidate for our main character hometown. Please let me know what you think.
Oh and special thanks to Aaron and Julio who stayed after the meeting with me to work on the project. That really mean a lot and your sketches are really AWESOME !!!
